Maggie Reads Books

A closet booknerd who spends all of her time reading and daydreaming about the fictitious places and people in her beloved books. Number one goal in life: READ ALL THE THINGS!

WE ARE THE GOLDENS by Dana Reinhardt

Two sisters meet at a crossroads in life. One stays left, the other goes right.

Nell and Layla Golden have always been close, but a distance is growing between them, and the younger of the two, Nell, feels powerless to stop it.

Feeling confused and hurt by Layla's ever-growing absence, Nell finds herself trying to navigate the choppy waters of high school alone. She seeks solace in her best friend (but not boyfriend) Felix, and finds distraction in her new found crush, Sam Fitzpayne, who seems to be into her too.

Always an undercurrent throughout the book, the catalyst for Layla’s unusual behavior is revealed. Nell finds herself torn between doing the right thing, and protecting her sister from heartache.

Written mostly in second person, I interpreted this book to be Nell’s ongoing letter to Layla, or to the Layla that she once knew anyways. She pours her heart and soul out, and holds no punches. She is honest and raw. In the end, her sister may not understand her reasoning. She may hate her for what she chooses to do, but one day she will read and know, Nell’s choice was made with only the best of intentions.

Poignant and heartfelt, I truly enjoyed WE ARE THE GOLDENS by Dana Reinhardt. The dialogue was realistic, the plot was not contrived, the interactions between characters- believable. I would definitely recommend reading this book.
